Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the origins of the name “Stillness in Activity Coaching”?

Shunryu Suzuki’s classic text “Zen Mind Beginner’s Mind” describes bowing (or in our case running) as a way to “get rid of our self-centered ideas… Your effort appeases your inmost desire. There is no other way to attain calmness… Real calmness should be found in activity itself” (Suzuki, 31). This book is a favorite of mine. Suzuki’s words spoke to my felt understanding of what running has done for me, and why I keep coming back to this practice, even though my goals are mind/body/spirit oriented.

2.  Will this coaching be very demanding? I'm already managing a busy schedule.

While endurance training can be hard, my coaching is designed to balance training load and recovery to promote adaptation. Endurance training, when done in balance with other lifestyle factors, also expands one’s capacity to handle stress of all kinds. I'll also offer recovery focused protocol to support this balance.

3.  Who typically benefits from your coaching services?

My coaching is beneficial for individuals seeking to improve their mental and physical health, through endurance training and contemplative, or meditative practice. I tailor my approach to your background, and would encourage anyone interested in endurance running, breath training, or mindfulness to reach out.

4. Why do clients choose to work with you?

Clients choose my coaching for its holistic and individualized approach. My experience as a runner, yoga teacher, and meditator enables me to offer a unique combination of approaches. Clients seeking a balanced, comprehensive training program that addresses physical, mental, and emotional aspects find my approach aligns with their goals.

5.  What's the difference between your coaching and traditional sports coaching?

Traditional sports coaching often focuses primarily on physical training with a performance orientation. The best coaches I have met are coaching the individual, not just the athlete. That is why my coaching consciously integrates physical training, breathwork and meditation to support overall well-being, resilience, and performance.

6.  I'm new to endurance running and mind-body practices. Can I still join?

Absolutely! My coaching is suitable for beginners and practiced individuals alike. If you are seeking a guide, or collaborative partner in supporting your growth and development in these areas of practice, please reach out.

7.  How long do clients typically work with you?

The duration varies based on individual goals and needs. Some clients achieve their goals within a few months, and have the skills they need to continue working without external support. Others continue for longer periods of time, because their goals, and their orientation are supported by a more long term engagement.

8. How do you integrate yoga into your coaching?

Yoga principles are integrated throughout the coaching process. We'll use yoga postures, breathwork, and meditation techniques to enhance your physical conditioning, respiratory efficiency, and mental clarity.

9.  What if I'm unsure about committing to the program?

I offer an initial consultation to discuss your goals, expectations, and to ensure we're a good fit. This session allows you to experience my coaching style and approach without any obligation.
